Useful tips for laptop users

Wednesday 30th June at 02:54 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

With laptops becoming even more portable, I thought it was probably a good time to remind people about some useful tips while using them. Here at The Laptop Specialist, we have seen lots of varied and unusual user damage to laptops. There are always the common ones when laptops get dropped from worktops/beds/laps etc and these often result in broken ports or cracked screens. On a few occasions though we have seen ones that have landed in sinks or even baths.

The kitchen does seem to be a place where laptops are often used and although multi tasking can be a great thing, perhaps in the case of cooking dinner while finishing off work on a laptop isn’t the best idea. As one of users soon found out when she left her laptop on her hob, which had sensor control and she came back to a smoke filled kitchen and a melted mess on the hob!

Of course the house isn’t the only place we need to be sensible with our laptops. The amount of times we’ve seen machines come in that were being used outside and got caught in the rain. As well as machines that have been stepped on after being left in the garden while the user quickly popped inside.

Over all portability is great but where ever you use your laptop make sure you are sensible and don’t leave it in a place that it is likely to get damaged.

Internet Explorer 9

Friday 25th June at 12:59 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Microsoft is in the process of fine tuning IE9 and have released a preview version for users to download. It is mainly there for developers to get used to it but the download is open to anyone who wants to test it.

Although IE isn’t the browser of choice for many people due to the  security issues and it being very slow, Microsoft have said that IE9 will not have the same problems. So will Microsoft succeed in brining more competition to the browser market?

Well download it here and see what you think?

HP launches Laptop for children

Thursday 24th June at 12:28 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments
HP are the latest to jump on the bandwagon with this rugged netbook aimed at primary school children. The HP Mini 100e is a pretty standard netbook specs-wise. It has an Intel N455 Atom processor; 1 GB of DDR3 RAM; a 160GB hard drive; a 10-inch display. Options for modem or WiFi; and a choice of Windows 7 Starter, XP or SUSE Linux Enterprise 11.
There's also an LED light on the lid that lights up when the user is online, meaning teachers can keep an eye out for kids surfing the web when they shouldn't be. One glaring issue is the weight at about 3.2 pounds, which is pretty heavy for a child to carry around. Pricing starts at $299 for its release next month in the US.

Laptops home alone

Tuesday 22nd June at 12:49 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

Latest research shows that nearly a third (32%) of all laptops stolen in the UK are taken from homes compared to France 22%, the US 18% and Germany 17%.   We here often the reason for buying a laptop over a PC is space issue in the home but this research shows that laptops aren’t being locked away when not in use.

If this is the case, people need to step up their security due to the amount of sensitive information that will be on that laptop. If a thief can get to your laptop, there are additional tools out there to help protect you such as being able to delete personal files remotely or tracking and recovering your laptop if its switched on. For more information, click here http://bit.ly/bRoMPW

Feeling hot hot hot

Wednesday 16th June at 12:44 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

No wonder this laptop was feeling hot – it didn’t take our engineer long to find the route of the problem. Look at this poor clogged fan, you can’t even see daylight through it it was so conjested with dirt and grime.

Thankfully, a good clean out resulted in a very happy cooler laptop.

Universal adapters

Monday 14th June at 01:32 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

We cannot tell you how many people we speak to each week regarding the mis-use of power adapters for laptops.  Either people try using one with the wrong volts/amps or they tape it up and hope for the best. Neither is healthy for the user or the laptop. If the laptop no longer recharges, you either need a new adapter or your power port may be faulty. Please check with a professional if this happens to you, in just 5 minutes you can normally determine what needs to be done.

Batteries catching fire

Friday 11th June at 12:55 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

Scientists have identified a reason why lithium batteries in laptops and mobile phones may overheat and catch fire.  When current batteries are charged quickly, minute lithium metal fibres (dendrites) can form on carbon anodes which can then cause short circuits, causing the battery to rapidly overheat and catch fire, Professor Clare Grey, of CambridgeUniversity's chemistry department said. "These dead lithium fibres have been a significant impediment to the commercialisation of new generations of higher capacity batteries," she said.  "Fire safety must be solved before we can get to the next generation of lithium-ion batteries and before we can safely use these batteries in a wider range of transport applications.  "Now that we can monitor dendrite formation inside batteries, we can identify when they are formed and under what conditions.   "Our new method should allow researchers to identify which conditions lead to dendrite formation and to rapidly screen potential fixes to prevent the problem."

Wireless laptop to your TV

Thursday 10th June at 01:12 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

Philips have been showing off their wireless TV which enables you to stream any content from your laptop to its new new 7700 Series LED Eco TV or to its BDP7320 Blu-ray player without the necessary wigit currently required with other brands/models.

This is great news as it does not limit you to whatever Internet services are installed on your Internet-connected TV. The bad news is that it is only available from the Autumn in the US so will be a while before it hits our high street vendors.

The laptop of the future?

A rolltop laptop sounds like a very futuristic gadget but this could be the way forward. German designer Evgeny Orkin’s rolltop concept design includes an OLED ( organic light emitting diode) display with a touch screen. All the laptop’s accessories from power supply to speakers are all integrated into the design. Now that sounds like a gadget I wouldn’t mind owning!

Toshiba go 3D

Monday 7th June at 11:40 am by Sam Francis | View/edit comments
Toshiba is looking to be the first manufacturer to put a 3D-capable Blu-ray Disc laptop on sale in Japan in July. The company's Dynabook TX/98MBL is based around a 3D system from graphics-chip maker NVidia.
NVidia's "3D Vision" system combines one of its GeForce graphics cards with a pair of active-shutter glasses, a plug-in transmitter to send sync signals to the glasses and software.
So how does this work? We hope you are sitting comfortably. Basically, active-shutter glasses flicker on and off 60 times per second in sync with the image being displayed on the screen. The screen shows 120 images per second with alternate frames for the right and left eye and the glasses help separate these and direct the relevant image to the correct eye. In this way the view gets an illusion of depth in the image. So basically, you are looking at a laptop can will support the ever more popular 3D movies.
It will go on sale in July in Japan for the equivalet of just over £1700.00. Of course Toshiba plans to put it on sale overseas but isn't ready to announce launch plans.

A good old blockage

Friday 4th June at 05:50 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

A customer logged a problem with us stating that their laptop was not booting and this happened suddenly.

Well it didn’t take us long to discover why as the fan was completely blocked causing the laptop to overheat. Fortunately, after a thorough clean by our engineer, the laptop fired up straight away – a lucky escape as this should have caused more damage to the system board.  Yes that is a build up of dirt and grime between the fan and connector....

Hitachi announces thin laptop hard drives

Wednesday 2nd June at 01:13 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments
Ultra-slim hard drives for netbooks and tablet PCs have been around for a while now but they have gained a reputation for being slow and limited in capacity. Hitachi reckons its latest offerings will blow SSD (solid state drives) out of the water when it comes to value for money boasting its quiet accoustics and low-energy consumption,

3 models of Hitachi's Z-series of 2.5-inch hard drives were announced yesterday all with 320GB capacity and at only 7mm thick (Z7K320, Z5K320 & Cinemastar Z5K320). Hitachi said it is currently shipping all three types in manufacturing quantities to OEMs, so you can expect to see them crammed into a laptop, tablet, set-top box or TV near you very soon.

Would you switch?

Tuesday 1st June at 12:53 pm by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

Kelkoo, the shopping comparison website, asked 950 people whether they were considering buying an Apple iPad. Nearly 33% said they would be interested in buying one whilst 40% said they would be prepared to swap their laptop for a touch-screen tablet like the iPad.

The iPad, which went on sale Friday selling from £429, is expected to be a huge hit with gadget fans. Shoppers in the US snapped up a 2 million iPads in the first 60 days.  It will be interesting to see how the iPad fares in the next month.
