Different uses for laptops

Thursday 30th September at 02:04 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Here at The Laptop Specialist we see laptops that have had lots of different uses, from candle holders, to plates, to coasters for drinks - none of these would be something we would suggest though. But I was definitely surprised to read a story today about a man who used his laptop as a shield against a tornado! He was sitting in a chair in his mobile home using his laptop when the tornado struck. The ceiling came crashing down so Jack Woolley held his laptop over his head to protect himself. Not much was salvaged from his home once the tornado had ripped through it, but luckily both Jack and his laptop came out of the ordeal okay, with the laptop still running.
Lets hope none of us have to put our laptop up against the tornado test!

Second Screen for your laptop

Wednesday 29th September at 02:10 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Pixel Qi have released a second screen for your laptop. The entire module can be plugged into a laptop or phones via USB and it creates an additional screen.
“This extra screen would be small and light enough to carry, very low power, offer crisp text for good reading and be readable in any light – even in sunlight,” said Pixel Qi in a statement.
The modules will start selling next month. Pixel Qi hasn’t disclosed pricing for the module, but I will keep you updated as I have a feeling this could become a popular option for business and personal laptop users alike.

New 8GB memory stick for laptops

Monday 27th September at 02:05 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Samsung have developed an eight gigabyte memory stick for laptops. They claim it uses about half as much power as two 4GB DDR3 modules. They haven’t confirmed pricing or release date as yet but have announced it will be available as an add-on for Dell’s Precision M6500 laptop, so chances are it should be available to the public in the near future.

The Latest Laptop scam

Friday 24th September at 12:03 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Police have issued a warning over a laptop scam. At the moment it seems to be occurring only in Leicester, but I felt it would be a good opportunity to remind you all to stay vigilant. The victims have been shown a laptop and when they hand over the cash they are given a bag that contains bottles or cardboard and the men then take off at high speed!
Pc Simon Alborn said: "Obviously the victims have been left extremely shocked by these incidents.
"They put their trust into these people and believed they were purchasing the items in good faith."
So if you are wanting to buy a new laptop I would suggest shops or online, not from someone on the street with a really good deal. As we’ve said on the blog many times before if the deal seems to good to be true, then it probably is.

Wireless charging for laptops

Thursday 23rd September at 01:54 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Fujitsu is hoping that new research could help remove some power cords like Bluetooth keyboards removed many of the cables we have at home or at work.

Fujitsu is developing a mechanism for wireless charging that it hopes to use in its products by 2012.

The idea offers the technology for a laptop or phone to charge when it sits on a desk or table.

"What Fujitsu Laboratories has done is to develop technology that dramatically shortens the time required to design transmitters and receivers for magnetic resonance charging systems and, in addition, enables accurate tuning of resonant conditions in the design phase, even for compact transmitters and receivers that are prone to influences from nearby metallic and magnetic objects," Fujitsu said.

New Dell Inspiron Duo laptop

Monday 20th September at 01:00 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments
So the i-Pad has been the hot new must have gadget lately with people loving the compact tablet style, personally it didn’t really appeal to me, I have always preferred the idea of a laptop to work on which is why I’m loving Dell’s latest release – the Inspiron Duo. This looks like any other tablet on the market and will be great for keeping in contact with friends, listening to music, watching movies etc, but – and here’s the big difference, when you are needing to work, the screen opens up, swivels around and turns into a laptop! Although there are other tablet/laptops on the market they all swivel around on one point at the base of the screen and often get broken. Dell’s design has 2 swivel points on either side of the screen. They have said we should see this on the market by the end of the year but as yet haven’t given any idea of price. But I will make sure I keep you updated on this great new product.

Microsoft scam

Friday 17th September at 11:40 am by Sam Francis | View/edit comments

A good friend of mine called last week concerned about a call she had just had. A gentleman with an Indian accent made out he was from Microsoft and explained they had had a series of notifications that she had a serious virus on her machine.  All he needed to do was to access her laptop remotely to simply remove it for her which she let him do. At the end of this, he requested payment to which she responded that she was not willing to pay as he had implied the service was free of charge.  She then put the phone down and heard no more from him. Having heard the story, we did some investigation to find this is indeed a scam. I rang my friend back advising her to backup all her data so she can run a complete clean reinstall of her operating system. I also advised her to change any login and passwords on her system, especially internet banking which fortunately she doesn’t do. So please be aware and let your friends know that if they ever receive a call from Microsoft, it is bound to be a scam as they would never contact you direct. See link for more information http://www.techeye.net/security/microsoft-scam-comes-to-a-phone-near-you

Extra USB ports added to your laptop

Tuesday 14th September at 10:27 am by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments
Lenovo have come up with a great solution for adding extra USB ports to your laptop without have to lug an extra USB hub around with you. I for one think it’s a brilliant idea!

They have taken the charger and turned it into a USB hub as well. Now not only do you plug the charger into the laptop and wall as before, you also have an additional cable to plug into one of the USB ports, and although that’s loosing 1 port on your laptop you gain 4 on the adapter.

Although at the moment if you don’t have a Lenovo this won’t be of any use to you as they are the only manufacture to release it, with any luck the other companies will follow suit and soon, whatever make and model of laptop you have you will be able to enjoy the benefits of this ingenious design.

Monday 13th September at 02:01 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

This is one for the ladies - or indeed any of you guys out there who would like to spoil your other half.

Check out these trendy laptop cases from Laptop Stuff. You can get them in a variety of sizes able to fit a small 10" notebook right through to the larger 17" widescreen machines. And starting from just over £30 I think its a great buy. And there's no denying how good they look, much better than having to carry around your laptop in a boring old standard black laptop case.

Laptop stickers

Tuesday 7th September at 11:21 am by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

How many of you have experienced the joy of buying a new laptop, eagerly waiting for it to be delivered, finally receiving and un-boxing it, finally getting your sleek looking machine in your hands, only to open the laptop and find your lovely new machine plastered with advertising stickers telling you what it has inside! What use are these stickers if you've already bought the machine, surely you would have found out before buying it what the laptop contained? And then you have the time consuming task of trying to scrape off the stickers with out ruining the machine. Well luckily for us AMD feel the same way about the stickers and are giving the manufactures the option of whether they want to apply them or not. And if the decision is to have the stickers then AMD has developed easy peel one! At last someone who is listening to the consumer, lets hope now that the other companies follow suit.

Disabling your laptop's touchpad

Monday 6th September at 12:46 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Many of you may already be using Touchfreeze- a free laptop utility that solves the problem of accidental swipes of your touchpad while typing. But if you upgrade to Windows 7 you will find the two systems incompatible. TouchpadPal is another free service that automatically disables a laptop's touchpad when it detects any activity on the keyboard, but unlike Touchfreeze, TouchpadPal is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7. So if this is one of your daily frustrations then download one of the above services and eliminate those annoying typing errors from accidentally brushing over your touchpad.

Friday 3rd September at 11:52 am by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments

Well it seems to be Toshiba's turn to have a massive recall due to a burn hazard. The overheating is affecting the Toshiba Satelite T135, Satelite T135D and Satelite Pro T130 notebook models. 41,000 were sold worldwide from August 2009 through to August 2010. HP Laptops new technology

Thursday 2nd September at 12:31 pm by Allie Finnie | View/edit comments
HP has introduced the new CoolSense technology into their latest version of its Pavilion dm3 laptop. The laptop has “strategically placed vents” as well as the HP Thermal assistant. This automatically detects where you are using your laptop, whether it is on a desk or your lap and the cooling system is then adjusted accordingly.

This definitely seems like a good answer to the overheating laptop problem, so hopefully if CoolSense works as promised HP will start to introduce it into all of their laptops.
